Amazon Relay insurance requirements

Buy four policies: a truck policy with $1,000,000 of auto liability per occurrence and at least $50,000 of trailer interchange, a motor truck cargo policy of $100,000, general liability of $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 aggregate, and workers' compensation with $100,000 of employer's liability. Those are Amazon Relay's minimums, and on ISO's standard forms no one policy carries them all: the motor carrier form excludes the freight you haul and workers' comp obligations, and the general liability form excludes the truck. Amazon says, in its February 13, 2026 insurance post, that newer carriers typically pay $12,000 to $18,000 a year for the required coverage.

Which policies meet Amazon Relay's insurance requirements?

Four, read as a policy schedule against Relay's five lines; the table maps each line to the policy that carries it. ISO's Motor Carrier Coverage Form, CA 00 20, excludes "any obligation" under a workers' compensation law and damage to "property owned or transported by the 'insured' or in the 'insured's' care, custody or control," which takes in the freight you haul. ISO's general liability form, CG 00 01, excludes any "auto" an insured owns or operates. Insurers on their own forms word these exclusions their own way, so read each policy against Relay's list line by line.

Relay's February 2026 insurance post words two lines differently from its FAQ: it calls the $50,000 item trailer interchange and ties it to semis, and it ties workers' comp to W-2 employees where the FAQ says "in all jurisdictions where your company operates," so ask Relay in writing before you leave either off. The auto limit is Amazon's number: 49 CFR 387.9 sets $750,000 for a for-hire carrier of nonhazardous property in interstate commerce in a vehicle of 10,001 pounds or more, and a policy bought at that floor needs its limit raised before you apply.

What does a semi truck need for Amazon Relay?

Trailer interchange on top of the liability limit. Relay's truck guide says "the majority of Amazon Relay loads are power-only – you bring your tractor, we'll provide the trailer." In CA 00 20, liability for a scheduled tractor reaches "any 'trailers' you don't own while attached" to it; damage to the trailer itself is what Section III, Trailer Interchange Coverage, pays: "all sums you legally must pay as damages because of 'loss' to a 'trailer' you don't own."

Relay's FAQ lists the line inside auto liability as trailer replacement; in CA 00 20 it is its own coverage, tied to trailers held "under a written 'trailer' or equipment interchange agreement." Ask for at least $50,000. We found no trailer interchange terms on Relay's public pages on 2026-10-03, and its FAQ says the full Program Policies are viewable once you onboard; ask Relay for its trailer terms and send them to your agent.

For drayage, Relay's September 2026 load-types post says you move "53' containers provided by Amazon (including chassis)" under the Uniform Intermodal Interchange Agreement. Its Section F.4, as ISO's CA 23 17 endorsement reprints it, says the "Motor Carrier agrees to defend, hold harmless, and fully indemnify the Indemnitees," and CA 23 17 makes the auto liability apply to "liability assumed by the named insured" under F.4. Ask for it before booking container loads.

What insurance does a box truck need for Amazon Relay?

The same five lines: Relay's FAQ list names no equipment type and we found no separate box truck schedule on its pages on 2026-10-03, though the trailer line is open for a straight truck because the insurance post ties it to semis, so ask Relay in writing before you buy it or leave it off.

Rented box trucks need their own line on the policy. Relay's discounts page offers rentals of "16ft box trucks, 26ft box trucks, and daycabs," and a rental is not one of the autos described on your declarations. In CA 00 20 that exposure is symbol 68: "Only those 'autos' you lease, hire, rent or borrow." Have your agent add hired auto liability or schedule the rental before the first load, and read the rental agreement for who pays for damage to the truck.

What cargo insurance does Amazon Relay require?

A motor truck cargo policy of at least $100,000, and that figure is Amazon's: FMCSA's filing chart shows a $0 cargo requirement for for-hire carriers of nonhazardous property. Your truck policy will not fill the line. CA 00 20's care, custody or control exclusion removes property you transport, and the MCS-90 endorsement excludes "property transported by the insured, designated as cargo."

Relay lists 53-foot reefers and refrigerated box trucks, and its truck guide says "your reefers must meet all regulations under the FDA's Sanitary Transportation Rule." If you will haul temperature-controlled loads, ask the cargo market in writing how the policy treats spoilage from a refrigeration breakdown.

Can I use a cargo van on Amazon Relay?

No. Relay's truck guide says "Cargo vans cannot be used for loads on Amazon Relay," so check the equipment list before you buy authority or a policy for a van; on a September 2026 call, a carrier with a ProMaster van told Redoubt it got its MC hoping to run Amazon Relay.

A van on its own authority has a lower federal floor. FMCSA's filing chart lists for-hire property carriers under 10,001 pounds GVWR at $300,000 of liability and $0 cargo. That row rests on 49 CFR 387.303(b)(1)(i), which eCFR says was "again suspended indefinitely" in 2019; FMCSA's chart still applies it, so confirm the figure with the insurer making your filing. The $750,000 schedule does not reach the van: 387.3(c)(1) says that subpart does not apply below 10,001 pounds.

What are the requirements for Amazon Relay?

Insurance is one of six gates, and it sets the clock. FMCSA says it "will not grant operating authority registration until the registrant has in effect the minimum levels of financial responsibility on file," and Relay's FAQ says it "typically requires" a DOT number at least 180 days old to complete onboarding, while encouraging you to apply early. The truck policy comes first and the authority ages after it, so if you start at the federal floor, plan the move to Relay's limits before you apply: ISO's common policy conditions say terms "can be amended or waived only by endorsement issued by us."

Relay's carrier guide asks you to match your application to the FMCSA database "down to the last dash," so give your agent your legal name and address exactly as FMCSA shows them. Relay's gates:

  • DOT number with interstate authority active 180 days, and a valid MC number
  • "Carrier" entity type, authorized for property and for hire
  • FMCSA safety rating of Satisfactory, None or Not Rated
  • BASIC scores under Relay's thresholds (60% or 75% by category)
  • Driver violation rate at or below 35%, vehicle rate at or below 50%
  • The five insurance lines

How do I update my insurance on Amazon Relay?

Change the policy first. Relay's insurance post says "adding vehicles, hiring drivers, or expanding your operating radius can all affect what coverage you need," and a higher limit, trailer interchange or a new truck is an endorsement the insurer issues under the common policy conditions above. Once it is issued, Relay's vendor gets the certificate from your agent, and Relay recommends updating the Insurance tab at least five days before a policy ends.

Which insurance companies write Amazon Relay coverage, and what does it cost?

Any insurer you choose. We found no approved-insurer list or insurer rating requirement on Relay's FAQ, apply page, posts or discounts page on 2026-10-03, and its insurance post says "Carriers ultimately decide who they get their coverage from." Relay offers McGriff Insurance quotes as one of its deals for onboarded carriers, and its discounts page says those deals are "only available to active Amazon Relay carriers," so before approval you buy on the open market.

Amazon says, in that February 13, 2026 post, that newer carriers typically pay $12,000 to $18,000 a year for the required coverage and experienced carriers with clean records often $8,000 to $14,000. Those are Amazon's figures with no method published, not a quote. The same post names what insurers price on: driving history and experience, equipment type and age, operating radius, claims history, credit score, and safety protocols and technology. Those are what your agent needs from you, and asking for all four policies quoted at Relay's limits gives you a total to set against Amazon's range.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lease on to another carrier and haul Amazon Relay loads?

Relay's requirements are set for the carrier: its own MC number and a "Carrier" entity type authorized for property and for hire. Its FAQ says a carrier invites its drivers into the Relay app; it does not address leased-on owner-operators, so ask both the carrier and Relay. Under 49 CFR 376.12(j)(1) your lease states the carrier's public liability obligation and who provides other coverage, such as bobtail.

Are Amazon Relay's insurance requirements different in California?

Not on Relay's pages. Its FAQ, apply page and insurance post publish one US list and name no state; we checked all three on 2026-10-03.
