What companies offer commercial auto insurance?

Progressive writes more commercial auto insurance than any other insurance group: 13.05% of U.S. commercial auto liability premium in 2025, by the NAIC's market share report. Travelers, Berkshire Hathaway (GEICO's parent), Old Republic, Liberty Mutual, State Farm, Zurich, Auto-Owners, AIG and The Hartford complete the top ten, which together wrote 45.88%. In Utah, Progressive and Auto-Owners lead. Progressive, GEICO, State Farm, Nationwide and Allstate each offer commercial auto, though GEICO says some of its policies are issued through National Indemnity or other insurers. USAA's agency offers it from insurers not affiliated with USAA, and AAA's Utah club says its agents work with many insurance companies.

Updated . Written by Andre Beukers, principal at Redoubt, a commercial insurance agency in Salt Lake City, not a government office.

Which companies write the most commercial auto insurance?

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners ranks each line by direct written premium, taken from the annual statements insurers file. In its 2025 report, published in August 2026, Progressive wrote $7.93 billion of commercial auto liability premium, 13.05% of the U.S. total and more than twice second-place Travelers' share. The ten largest groups wrote 45.88% of a $60.8 billion market; the 125 largest wrote 96.18%.

The NAIC counts a group, not a brand. Berkshire Hathaway's group is third at 5.25%. GEICO says "Government Employees Insurance Co. is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc." and that some of its policies are issued through National Indemnity Company, "also a member of the Berkshire Hathaway group of insurance companies."

Utah's table is different. Progressive leads again with 12.83% of the state's $544 million, but Auto-Owners is second at 10.58%, Acuity and Cincinnati make the top ten, and Berkshire Hathaway and State Farm do not; the report prints only ten groups per state. Auto-Owners says it offers its products through independent agents, so the second-largest commercial auto writer in Utah is reached through an agency, not a website.

Market share counts premium already written, not whether a carrier wants your vehicles, your radius or your loss history this year.

Does Progressive offer commercial auto insurance?

Yes, and it says it is the largest: "As America's #1 commercial auto insurer, Progressive Commercial is ready to partner with businesses of all sizes," citing an SNL Financial report for the third quarter of 2025. Its page covers company cars, vans and light trucks, heavier trucks "from dump trucks to tractor trailers," and trailers, in all 50 states but not Washington, D.C.

You can buy it directly or through an agent: "We offer insurance by phone, online and through independent agents. Prices vary based on how you buy." Size does not mean every account stays: Redoubt's September 2026 notes record a dump truck operator Progressive dropped after he added a hotshot, who moved to National Indemnity.

Does GEICO offer commercial auto insurance?

Yes. GEICO's commercial auto page says it "helps cover the vehicles your business uses to get the job done, from sedans and vans to other eligible business vehicles," and lists truck, box truck, dump truck, cargo, non-trucking liability and owner-operator coverage. A quote starts with a ZIP code on its site.

The company on the policy can vary. GEICO says coverage is underwritten by Government Employees Insurance Company, but "in some cases coverage is provided through the GEICO Insurance Agency, LLC, either under an arrangement with National Indemnity Company (NICO), a Berkshire Hathaway affiliate, or with non-affiliated insurers." It also says "some discounts, coverages, payment plans and features are not available in all states," so a quote with your ZIP code is how to find out what it will write for a van in California or a dump truck in Utah.

Do State Farm and Allstate offer commercial auto insurance?

Yes, both say they offer it; State Farm points you to its agents and Allstate to a phone line. State Farm says it "offers coverage for a variety of vehicle types including cars, pickup trucks, box trucks, flatbeds, farm vehicles and vans," and its page tells you to contact a State Farm agent to see how a policy would work for your business. State Farm's group is sixth in U.S. commercial auto liability with 3.26%; it does not appear in Utah's top ten.

Allstate's commercial auto page says "Company cars, trucks, vans and specialty vehicles can all be covered under commercial auto policies" and asks you to call for a quote. Its other small business lines work differently: Allstate's business insurance page says its get-a-quote button takes you off Allstate.com to the ERGO NEXT website. Allstate's group ranks 33rd in U.S. commercial auto liability with 0.70%.

Does Nationwide offer commercial auto insurance?

Yes, for cars and work trucks short of a tractor. Nationwide lists cars, cargo vans, work vans, box trucks, pickup trucks and utility trucks among the vehicles it insures, and draws one hard line: "We don’t insure semi-trucks or tractor trailers." A hauler with a tractor needs a different market.

Nationwide quotes through agents: "You’ll need to contact an agent for an accurate quote." It also says it recommends at least $500,000 in liability coverage per vehicle. That is Nationwide's advice, not a legal minimum; the limit you carry is set by your contracts and what you have to protect. Nationwide's group is 25th in U.S. commercial auto liability with 1.12%.

Does AAA offer commercial auto insurance?

It depends on the AAA club. The club that serves Utah, AAA Mountain West Group, says "AAA MWG serves Alaska, Arizona, Northern California, Montana, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming." Its business insurance page lists Commercial Auto among its coverages, which "Provides liability and physical damage protection for vans, trucks, cars, and other vehicles used for business," and sends you to an AAA Commercial Insurance agent by phone or an online quote form. It says "Our knowledgeable agents work with many leading insurance companies," and does not name the insurer that writes its commercial auto.

Clubs differ. AAA Club Alliance, another club, suggests commercial auto for automotive businesses but leaves it off its list for contractors. If one AAA office said it does not do commercial vehicles, that is one club's answer; ask the club for your ZIP code, and which insurer it would use.

Does USAA offer commercial auto insurance?

Not on its own paper. USAA's commercial auto page says "We’ve selected leading insurance companies to help meet your needs" and routes you to a USAA Insurance Agency commercial specialist. Its disclosure says the agency "contracts with insurance carriers that are not affiliated with USAA" and that those third-party products are not underwritten by USAA or its affiliates.

The NAIC table is consistent with that: no USAA group appears among the 125 largest U.S. commercial auto liability writers in 2025. A member who speaks with the agency's commercial specialist is offered third-party products, which USAA says are "not underwritten by USAA or its affiliates."

Who will insure my work vehicles after a non-renewal?

Two accounts in Redoubt's September 2026 notes show how differently a forced switch can go. The dump truck operator Progressive dropped after he added a hotshot moved to National Indemnity. A trucker who wants off Progressive has a tipped truck on his loss record, and in Redoubt's notes that keeps other markets away.

Two of Redoubt's own files turned on paperwork. One market told Redoubt, before binding a courier account, "Prior to binding, please provide 5 years of currently valued loss runs," and underwriters passed on a hotshot account because "the truck and trailer aren't in the LLC's name." Those are two files, not a rule every market applies, but loss runs and titles are both things you can order or fix before a market asks.

If every standard and specialty market declines, Utah has an assigned risk plan. AIPSO's Utah page says National Specialty Insurance Company became "the CAIP Servicing Carrier for the Utah Automobile Insurance Plan" on September 1, 2022, and lists a plan office line for consumers looking for assigned risk coverage. Redoubt works these files as an independent broker, loyal to the owner rather than to any single carrier.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy commercial auto insurance without an agent?

Yes, from some insurers. Progressive sells by phone, online and through independent agents, and GEICO starts a commercial auto quote with your ZIP code on its site. Nationwide says you need an agent for an accurate quote, State Farm says to contact its agent for a customized quote, and Auto-Owners, second in Utah, sells through independent agents.

Does the biggest commercial auto insurer charge the least?

No published figure says so. The NAIC table counts premium written, which measures size, not price, and Progressive's own page says its prices vary based on how you buy. The only way to compare is to quote the same vehicles, drivers and limits with more than one market.
