Average cost of commercial auto insurance

Published figures run from about $50 to $1,250 a month per vehicle, depending on who publishes them and what the vehicle does. Progressive Commercial says its new 2025 business auto policies averaged $276 a month per vehicle, with a median of $207, and its for-hire transport trucks $926. Insureon, on a page updated March 4, 2026, says its small-business customers' median policy costs $245 a month. The Hartford, updated August 27, 2026, says its customers paid about $574 a month. biBerk's undated FAQ puts smaller commuter or consultant vehicles at $600 to $1,500 a year and for-hire trucking at $5,000 to $15,000. Each figure counts a different book, so use them to test a quote, not to predict one.

What do insurers say commercial auto insurance costs?

Of the insurers and agencies we checked, three publish a number drawn from their own customers, and each counts something different. Progressive Commercial's figures are 2025 premiums on new policies, per power unit, for liability and physical damage, on policies with no driver violations. Insureon's is the median of policies sold to its small-business customers, drawn from 100,000 owners who bought through it; the page calls that median an average. The Hartford's is what its customers paid for commercial auto, with no breakdown by vehicle or coverage. biBerk gives ranges instead, per vehicle per year, without saying what they are drawn from.

Per vehicle against per policy is the first thing to check. A three-van policy at $600 a month is $200 a van, under Progressive's business auto median; set against Insureon's $245 per policy, the same account looks expensive. Progressive also says "Many customers have a monthly premium closer to the median price," and its medians run $57 to $251 a month below its averages, so the median is the better yardstick for a single quote.

Why is my quote higher or lower than the average?

Because the rate is built from your account, not from anyone's average. Progressive says a rate "can vary based on several factors, including driving history, coverage needs, and profession," and its Utah page adds the vehicle's size and use, its location, and how far it travels: a route inside St. George's city limits is considered lower risk than one covering all of southern Utah. On drivers, it says the carrier will run a motor vehicle report on every driver with access to the vehicles and look at the past three years. Insureon names the number of vehicles, their value, their business use and the drivers' records.

Insureon's customers pay from under $375 to over $16,000 a year; 40% pay less than $200 a month and 29% pay $200 to $400; subtraction leaves 31% above $400, a share Insureon does not print itself. Equipment changes the vehicle too: Progressive says a pickup with a ladder rack and a permanently attached toolbox "might cost more to insure than a standard truck without additional features."

Limits are the other lever. Utah Code 31A-22-304 sets the floor for a policy issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025 at $30,000 per person, $65,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage. Progressive's Utah commercial auto page still prices the comparison from "the Utah state minimum limits of 25/65/15," which the statute applies only to policies issued or renewed on or before December 31, 2024.

How much does it cost to insure a Sprinter van?

It depends on what the van does, because the published groups sort by use, not by model. None of the insurers and agencies we checked publishes a Sprinter figure: Progressive, The Hartford, ERGO NEXT, biBerk and Insureon print none. What they do publish puts the same van in very different groups.

Progressive does not say which of its groups a Sprinter falls in, and its groups are named for what the business does, not for the vehicle model. Its business auto group covers "cars, SUVs, small trucks, and vans," and it describes contractors moving tools in "pickup trucks, cargo vans, SUVs, and trailers"; those groups averaged $276 and $260 a month per vehicle in 2025. Its for-hire transport group, which averaged $926, is "usually heavy freight trucks, like semis," though Progressive names "general haulers, expeditors, and owner operators" among its customers. Describe what the van does when you ask for a quote.

The van's value counts too; Insureon lists vehicle value next to the number of vehicles and their use. Progressive's averages count only liability and physical damage, so they say nothing about the price of cargo or tools coverage. Insureon adds that commercial trucks and trailers "usually cost more to insure than vans and sedans."

How much more does commercial auto insurance cost than personal auto?

No publisher gives a like-for-like ratio. The nearest pair comes from one company: Progressive says its liability-only personal auto policies, one vehicle and one driver, averaged $112.80 a month across its medium-cost group of states, which includes Utah; its footnote dates that to 2025, and the page body to 2024-2025. Its business auto policies averaged $276 a month per vehicle, but that figure includes physical damage and the personal one does not, so the gap is not the price of the commercial label alone.

The carriers' own explanations point to limits and coverage. Progressive says business auto "often costs more than personal auto insurance because it has higher liability limits and more coverage in case of an accident." The Hartford says commercial auto "protects you against more expensive risks and provides a higher level of coverage."

Sometimes the cheaper answer is not a commercial policy at all. The Utah Insurance Department says that if you use your vehicle for anything beyond commuting and pleasure, "you may need a commercial auto policy, or you may need to see if your personal auto policy can be endorsed to cover your specific business use." Settle which of the two your driving needs before comparing prices; a personal premium that does not cover the driving you do is not a saving.

Are commercial auto rates going up, or is it just my renewal?

Both can be true. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' producer price index for commercial auto insurance stood at 128.360 in August 2021 and 148.005 in August 2026, a rise of about 15%, including 8.6% in the year to August 2025. Since then it has moved little: it printed 149.735 for every month from May to December 2025 and 148.005 from May to August 2026, the last four marked preliminary. The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers says its members reported commercial auto premiums up 4.5% on average in the second quarter of 2026, the second-highest increase of any line, in a quarter when, by the same survey, premiums across all account sizes fell 2.0% on average.

Whatever the market did, the renewal itself shows what the carrier priced. Put it next to the expiring declarations page and check each line: vehicles and their values, drivers and their records, the radius and use the carrier has on file, limits, deductibles and coverages. Progressive says the carrier runs a motor vehicle report on all drivers with access to your business vehicles, so check that the driver list on the renewal is the one you actually run. How you pay matters as well: Progressive's Utah page says you can "Save 10% or more when you pay in full," where the discount is offered.

Frequently asked questions

Is the average the price I will be quoted?

No. Progressive says its average "isn't necessarily what you'll pay" and that many customers pay closer to the median, which is lower in every group it publishes. Your quote comes from your vehicles, drivers, use, garaging and limits.

Is there a Utah average for commercial auto insurance?

None of the publishers we checked prints one. Progressive's Utah commercial auto page lists rating factors but no figure, and Insureon's state table covers ten states, none of them Utah. Progressive places Utah in its medium-cost group for personal auto only.

Why can't I see a commercial auto price online?

ERGO NEXT says commercial auto "doesn’t have a fixed price because costs are based on your specific business risk." The Hartford's cost page says it does not currently offer this coverage online for small businesses and refers buyers to a partner.
