A dump truck or trailer is being added and the personal policy will not take it

Commercial dump truck insurance

Commercial dump truck insurance is a business auto policy on the truck: liability to others, physical damage to the truck, and the PIP, uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage Utah Code 31A-22-302 calls for, the last two unless waived. The liability floor depends on how the truck runs. FMCSA requires $750,000 for for-hire, interstate, nonhazardous hauling at 10,001 lb GVWR and up. Utah's R909-1-4(2) sets $750,000 for an intrastate private carrier without naming a weight; read with R909-1-3(1) and Utah Code 72-9-102(3), it reaches a contractor's own truck of 26,001 lb or more that stays in Utah. R909-1-4(3) sets $1,000,000 for oil or hazardous loads. ISO's general liability form excludes the truck, loading and unloading included.

Do I need commercial insurance for a dump truck?

Probably, if the truck does any work for a business. Utah's Insurance Department says that if you use a vehicle "for any purpose other than driving to work and pleasure use, you may need a commercial auto policy," and its examples include landscaping and snowplowing. Progressive Commercial puts a dump truck on a commercial policy by weight: "You'll need a commercial auto insurance policy if your vehicle is heavier than a typical pickup or SUV, like a dump truck, semi truck, or commercial trailer."

Hauling only your own spoil and rock fits R909-1-4(1)'s private motor carrier, one that "provides transportation of property or passengers by commercial motor vehicle and is not a for-hire motor carrier," and R909-1-4(2) sets that carrier's limit.

What are the insurance requirements for a dump truck?

FMCSA's 49 CFR 387.9 sets $750,000 for "For-hire (In interstate or foreign commerce, with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,001 or more pounds) Property (nonhazardous)", so a dump truck is held to it only when all four conditions hold, and the weight line is 10,001 lb, not a Class 8 truck.

Utah sets its own floor for trucks that stay in the state. R909-1-4(2) says "Each intrastate private motor carrier must have a minimum amount of $750,000 liability," and names no weight. The weight comes from elsewhere: R909-1-3(1) applies the federal rules UDOT adopts to "intrastate commercial motor carriers as defined in Subsection 72-9-102(3)", and Utah Code 72-9-102(3) defines an intrastate commercial vehicle as one used for business "only within the boundaries of this state" and rated at 26,001 lb or more (16,001 with a driver under 18). Our reading of the three together is that a contractor's own dump truck of 26,001 lb or more that stays in Utah is held to $750,000. Oil and hazardous materials raise the figure to $1,000,000 with an MCS-90 under R909-1-4(3).

One case is open: R909-1-4 states no figure for a for-hire dump truck hauling other people's gravel only inside Utah, and the Part 387 that R909-1-3 adopts writes its $750,000 row for interstate carriage. Confirm the figure with UDOT before hauling for hire inside Utah. For a lighter, nonhazardous truck that stays in Utah, the floor we found is the Utah Code 31A-22-304 minimum for policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025.

What does dump truck insurance cover?

On the ISO Business Auto Coverage Form, CA 00 01, liability pays for injury or damage "resulting from the ownership, maintenance or use of a covered "auto"." It excludes damage from moving property by a mechanical device "unless the device is attached to the covered "auto"," so property moved by a device attached to the truck stays inside the auto policy and property moved by a loader that is not attached is outside it.

Physical damage covers the truck. Comprehensive excludes the truck's "collision with another object" and its "overturn", and collision covers both, so a truck that rolls while dumping is a collision claim. The load is outside the form, which excludes property "owned or transported by the "insured""; motor truck cargo, which Progressive says "pays for damages to the materials you transport," is the separate coverage for the load. GEICO says it offers "physical damage-only policies for dump trucks" to owner-operators whose liability sits under someone else's authority.

Utah Code 31A-22-302 adds uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage unless waived, and PIP, which paragraph (2) does not require on trailers.

Does a dump truck need general liability insurance?

Not for the truck itself. The ISO general liability form, CG 00 01, excludes injury or damage arising out of the use of any "auto" an insured owns or operates, and adds "Use includes operation and "loading or unloading"." Its auto is "A land motor vehicle, trailer or semitrailer designed for travel on public roads," so the dump trailer is excluded too.

The two forms divide the haul at the same points. CG 00 01 defines loading or unloading as handling property from the place where it "is accepted for movement into or onto" an auto until it reaches "the place where it is finally delivered", and leaves out a mechanical device "that is not attached to the" auto. The auto form excludes handling outside those points and damage "arising out of your work after that work has been completed or abandoned." Stockpile handling before loading, a loader that is not attached to the truck, and finished work after delivery therefore sit outside the auto policy and outside the general liability form's auto exclusion. These are ISO's base forms; your carrier's own forms and endorsements are what control.

How do I add a dump truck to my commercial auto policy?

Read the symbols on your declarations before you buy. CA 00 01 says "The symbols entered next to a coverage on the Declarations designate the only "autos" that are covered "autos"," and liability and physical damage can carry different ones. Under symbol 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 19, a truck of the described type that you acquire mid-term is covered for the rest of the policy period.

Symbol 7, specifically described autos, is the narrow one: a new truck is covered only if the policy already covers every auto you own for that coverage, or the truck replaces one that had it, and "You tell us within 30 days after you acquire it." A landscaper who lists two pickups and buys a used dump truck in March has 30 days.

A dump trailer follows the same rule, because the form's auto is "A land motor vehicle, "trailer" or semitrailer designed for travel on public roads": under symbol 7, a trailer you buy mid-term is covered on the same two conditions and the same 30 days. Separately, Section I.C adds trailers of 3,000 lb GVWR or less as covered autos for liability, whatever the symbol. And say whether the truck will ever haul for someone else; even occasional hauling for other companies can move the operation toward for-hire trucking.

Can I insure a dump truck for personal use?

Utah defines personal lines insurance as coverage "sold for primarily noncommercial purposes to: (a) an individual; or (b) a family." Whether a personal auto insurer will write a dump truck under that heading is a question for that insurer and its policy wording, so ask before you rely on it. Progressive Commercial's rule, quoted above, sends a dump truck to a commercial policy on weight.

Pay changes the category. 49 CFR 390.5 defines a for-hire motor carrier as "a person engaged in the transportation of goods or passengers for compensation," so hauling for pay is for-hire work under the federal definition.

Which companies insure dump trucks?

Commercial auto carriers that publish dump truck programs include GEICO and Progressive Commercial, and both say they make the filings. GEICO says "At GEICO, we can provide you with the state and federal filings your business needs." Progressive says "When you choose our dump truck insurance and file for authority, we'll handle federal and state filings for you."

Neither page publishes a rate. Both list cost factors tied to the operation: Progressive says insurers "will consider whether you operate under your own U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) authority or are leased to a motor carrier," and GEICO lists truck size, cargo, distance and driving record. A change can end a placement: in one Redoubt prospect file, a dump fleet's carrier dropped it after a hotshot was added.

Redoubt is an independent broker that compares carriers rather than writing for one.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a CDL to drive a dump truck?

Under 49 CFR 383.5 a single truck rated at 26,001 lb or more is a Group B commercial motor vehicle, and a 26,001 lb combination towing a unit over 10,000 lb is Group A.

Is a concrete mixer or pump truck insured like a dump truck?

The truck itself is an auto: CA 00 01 says land vehicles subject to a compulsory or financial responsibility law are considered autos. The form excludes operating the equipment its definition lists, cherry pickers, air compressors, pumps and generators, and the general liability form writes that operation back in. Mixer drums are not named on that list.

Is a farm dump truck treated differently?

FMCSA's covered farm vehicle, among other conditions, hauls farm commodities, livestock, machinery or supplies and is not used for hire; paragraph (2) of the definition lets such a vehicle use the exemptions in 390.39. Utah's Insurance Department lists farm-to-market delivery among the uses that may need a commercial policy or a change to the current one.

Do dump truck insurance requirements change by state?

FMCSA's $750,000 for for-hire, interstate, nonhazardous property hauling at 10,001 lb GVWR and up is a federal rule. For work inside one state, Progressive says each state decides how much coverage these trucks need; Utah's figures are in R909-1-4 and Utah Code 31A-22-304.

Adding a dump truck this season?

Text Redoubt the truck's VIN and GVWR, your current declarations page, and whether it will haul only your own material. We will tell you which limit applies, whether your policy picks the truck up on its own, and what the carrier needs before the truck goes to work.

This is general insurance information, not legal advice or a coverage determination. The policy forms, the endorsements the carrier issues, and the requirement in writing from whoever is asking control.
